Zeag improves life at university campus


   Challenge
The overcrowded car parks frustrated an increasing number of students and faculty members. There had to be change to the current Parking control.

Solution
The University decided to move from a manual control system to a fully automated parking system with increased operating efficiency and revenues.

Result
The University was able to reduce the overcrowding of cars, reduce the waiting list, improve revenues and increase their green space, benefiting the environment.

About McMaster University
McMaster University is located in Hamilton, Ontario and is home to one of the largest medical research facilities in Canada. Situated on over 300 acres of land, McMaster tries to maintain their green space while being able to accommodate their parking customers. Attendance at McMaster University is over 20,000 students and they currently employ 1434 faculty members. Currently they have approx. 5000 parking spaces consisting of surface lots and underground options.

The Challenge - to increase capacity, efficiency and revenues.
Before McMaster University automated their parking, they maintained their car parks/lots using a manual system with manned kiosks.

At the current time before the ZEAG OrionXR Parking Solution was installed McMaster University hired a student to count cars. This process was then used to figure out whether they could sell more monthly parking passes or whether the car parks were full.

This method did not prove to be a reliable one, since revenue was being lost, due to improper counting methods, and not enough spaces being sold.

This posed several issues with, at times, the result of overcrowded car parks which led to lowered revenues and raised frustrations with students and faculty members.

This manual counting led to the car park lots looking full, and at times not actually being full, which led to lost potential revenue. There was also a waiting list for spaces which meant some members waiting for years for a car park space.

The Implementation
By awarding the parking system contract to Zeag Canada, the University was able to automate their parking system and increase operating efficiency and revenues all by adopting ZEAG OrionXR.

The system was able to give real time numbers on how many cars were in the lots, as well as how many parking passes were sold.

Manual counting of cars became obsolete as the ZEAG OrionXR system provided accurate numbers. Revenues were gained, and waiting lists were shrinking.

Another great benefit that the ZEAG OrionXR system provided to the University is that parking became a self service solution for the staff as well as the students. Not only could the students sign up for classes online, but they could also buy text books, and purchase their parking passes, free of any waiting lists and complications.

The results
By creating a self-service solution with ZEAG OrionXR equipment, the University has created a better relationship with their members, ensuring a seamless and flawless process when it comes to parking.

The full automation has allowed for more revenue and less parking spaces, and has created more availability in all prime parking lots.
By integrating a fully automated system, the parking department is thrilled, the campus parking customers are happy, and ZEAG is proud to have become a partner with McMaster University.
